This diagram shows
the 'ideal' of critical thinking. Something is said, read or taught, the learner
hears this, analyses, synthesizes and criticizes what they heard, then outputs
their own understanding, thoughts and critique. Resulting from this analytical
process the learner comes up with questions, which are posed back, and discussion
over the subject develops, where in the end there are 2 learners, learning
from and teaching each other. It is hoped that this will lead to greater understanding
on both sides.
The problem is how to convert this theoretical process into the multimedia
environment. Here is a pictorial definition of the required multimedia process.
Critical thinking pictorial definition
- Multimedia Environment
It is clear that this is a problem that needs thinking through. See discussion
board, message titled 'Teach Critical Thinking' posted by myself and reply
by 'FF', who states that the problem is to avoid a didactic 'banking' teaching
environment, i.e one that just spews out information without allowing the
two way interaction, discussion and questioning.
The process of critical thinking
in its very essence needs a two way interaction, feedback and response.
